Workshop Venue
The ICES workshop took place in Delft. The old city of Delft is re-known in the arts world and in science. For example, the painter Johannes Vermeer, the famous Delft Blue pottery, the foundations of international maritime law, the invention of the microscope, and, more recent, several Nobel-prize winners from the Delft University of Technology stem from Delft. The old city centre has many canals, arts galleries, churches and museums worth visiting. NB: The Dutch national standards body, the NEN, is also located in Delft.
Travelling to Delft
Delft is located between Rotterdam and The Hague (Den Haag). It is easy to reach by train, air or sea. Schiphol airport (Amsterdam), Rotterdam airport and the major ferry connections from England are near. The train from Schiphol to Delft takes 45 minutes (change trains at Leiden station). From Brussels and Paris you can take the intercity or the more expensive and slightly quicker high speed train to Rotterdam and change there to a slower train for Delft central station (Rotterdam - Delft 10 minutes). To check the timetable of the national and normal international intercity trains please consult http://www.ns.nl.
The workshop starts at the restaurant Van der Dussen (see below) on Wednesday evening. The sessions on Thursday and Friday will take place at the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management, Room a1.270, Jaffalaan 5, Delft
From the central train station of Delft you can take bus 63 (direction Tanthof) or 129 (direction Rotterdam) to the Aula of the TU Delft (bus trip takes 5-10 minutes). Walk back about 15 meters in the direction which the bus came from and turn left immediately into the Jaffalaan. The Faculty of TPM (TBM) is the third building on the left. If you go by car, take the direction Delft Zuid and follow the lane TU. At the end of the lane turn right into Schoemakerstraat and drive on till the third street left (C. Huygensweg). At the end of this street turn right (Mekelweg). The second street on the left is the Jaffalaan. The third building is the Faculty site.
To give you an indication of the distances, from the central train station of Delft to the faculty is a 25 minute walk (casual walking).
